Al­though the Janis­sary sound was fa­mil­iar in Eu­rope dur­ing the 18th cen­tury, the Clas­si­cal com­posers were not the first to make use of it; rather, the first im­i­ta­tors were mil­i­tary bands. Originally consisting of a pair of kettledrums or timpani, appearing normally with a pair of trumpets, in the orchestra of the later 18th century, a military importation, the percussion section was significantly enlarged with the allegedly Turkish fashion of the later 18th century, involving the occasional use of bass drum, cymbals and triangle in an imitation of the Janissary band.
