Do Not Sell My Personal Information, Your California Privacy Rights This 2004 photograph documents the retreat of McCarty Glacier from the field of view, a retreat of more than 15 kilometers (9.8 miles). Several dozen dead trees are remnants of a mid-20th century forest that was drowned by more than 3 meters (9.8 feet) of down warping of the coast during the 1964 Alaskan Earthquake. Note the dense vegetation that has developed on the till cover of White Thunder Ridge. In the roughly 60-80 years between photographs, Northwestern Glacier has retreated out of the field of view. Scientists from the University of Alaska and the U.S. Geological Survey estimate that Alaska is losing ice at the rate of 75 billion metric tons a year. I did it for the sole purpose of helping educate and communicate about the world's big climate change problems so that more might take action before it's too late. Isolated patches of snow are present at a few higher elevation locations. Melting Alaska glacier could unleash ‘mega-tsunami’ this year An island and a large area of glacially sculpted bedrock have emerged from beneath the retreating glacier. The southernmost named glacier among them is the Lilliput Glacier in Tulare County, east of the Central Valley of California. We had a beautiful view of the glacier from our cabin porch with two rocking chairs, as well as the dining room and the sitting area in front of the main lodge.I would go out and just sit on the rocker and gaze at the Pedersen lower lagoon, and the glacier. A pair of northwest-looking photographs taken from about 8 kilometers (5 miles) north of the mouth of McCarty Fjord, Kenai Fjords National Park, Alaska. The Harding Icefield glaciers that drain east are in the Kenai Fjords National Park, which has a monitoring program. This pair of oblique aerial photographs of Yale Glacier, Chugach Mountains, Chugach National Forest, Alaska, documents changes that occurred during the 69 years between June 1937 and July 28, 2006. Pedersen Glacier, at Aialik Bay in Alaska’s Kenai Mountains, in 1917 (left) and 2005 (right). An unprecedented ‘mega-tsunami’ could be caused by a melting Alaska glacier, scientists have warned. Geophysicist Chunli Dai from the Ohio State University told NASA’s Earth Observatory: “It was hard to believe the numbers at first. Both photographs are taken towards the north and show the retreating, calving, tidewater terminus of Yale Glacier, located at the head of Yale Arm, College Fiord, Prince William Sound, Alaska. Also ventured to Pedersen Glacier via the lagoon and had lunch. If it’s not that soon, they think the ‘mega-tsunami’ is likely to happen within the next two decades. Our family of four (parents, sons ages 13 and 16) did a two-night kayak trip with Jamie from KAW. This suggests that retreat and thinning began in the mid- to late-19th century. The total melting during this period added about half an inch to global sea levels—enough to cover the United States with a layer of water one-and-a-half feet thick. I found those photos in this YouTube video after viewing a short video about how warm it is in the Arctic Circle this year, where glaciers are melting during the winter instead of forming new ice. They’re worried about an area called Prince William Sound along the south coast of Alaska in the US. Riggs Glacier has retreated as much as 0.6 kilometers (0.37 miles) and thinned by more than 0.25 kilometers (0.16 miles). The shallow water adjacent to the shoreline in the foreground appears to be covered by a small thickness of sea ice, containing a number of pieces of brash ice. Six decades later, Muir Glacier has retreated out of the field of view and is now located more than 7 kilometers (4.4 miles) to the northwest. Science. Note the large trees. “Based on the elevation of the deposit above the water, the volume of land that was slipping, and the angle of the slope, we calculated that a collapse would release 16 times more debris and 11 times more energy than Alaska’s 1958 Lituya Bay landslide and mega-tsunami.”. A stream of icebergs issues from several embayments cut into the approximately 45 meter (148 feet) high face on the east side of the terminus. Estimates suggest that the glacier once measured as much as 164 feet thick. “We believe that it is possible that this landslide-generated tsunami will happen within the next year, and likely within 20 years.”. The early photograph shows the more than 100 meters (328 feet) high tidewater terminus of the glacier with a face capped by angular séracs. The pair documents changes that have occurred during the 85 years between June 1919 and August 2004. Pedersen Glacier, 1920-1940 A view looking north toward Pedersen Glacier, Kenai Mountains, Aialik Bay, Alaska, taken from the west shoreline of Aialik Bay. Details. The ice thickness in the center of the photographs is more than 0.7 kilometers (0.43 miles). It was said to have reached 1,720 feet tall and the impact was compared to an atomic bomb by eye-witnesses. No icebergs are visible. The retreat began in the 1800s when Alaska was still Russian territory. “The unstable slope in Barry Arm is much bigger than either of these examples, and thus has the potential to produce a larger tsunami that could have impacts throughout Prince William Sound.”. The first photograph is an undated winter to early spring view, probably taken between the mid-1920s and the 1940s. There are almost no traces of the glacier … Eklutna Glacier is a land terminating glacier in Chugach State Park and the Chugach Mountains near Anchorage, Alaska. The 1899 photograph is taken towards the northwest and shows the approximately 60 meter (197 foot) high tidewater terminus of the then retreating Reid Glacier. Satellite images have shown how ice melt on the glacier has left a large rocky area exposed. No vegetation is present at the head of the fiord. The second photograph dates from August 12, 2005. Graphic: Dramatic glacier melt There’s nothing quite like historical photos of glaciers to show what a dynamic planet we live on. For nearly two centuries prior to 1941, Muir Glacier had been retreating. - Pedersen Glacier, located in Kenai Fjords National Park, receded throughout the 20th century, exposing Pedersen Spit and Pedersen Lagoon. The region's permafrost, ground that is perpetually frozen, is thawing in Alaska's interior, and pockets of underground ice trapped in the frost are melting with it. No trees are present on the hillside or on any other surface in the field of view. In the 1980s, the lagoon was designated as the Pedersen Lagoon Wildlife Sanctuary, a 1,700-acre sanctuary meant to preserve and protect the area's wildlife and land. The 1905 photograph shows that Toboggan Glacier was thinning and retreating and was surrounded by a large bedrock barren zone. Muir Inlet, pictured in a late 19th century photograph, actually a postcard. Opinions expressed by Forbes Contributors are their own. The glaciers we see today in the park are increasingly small remnants of their former selves, but all around us we can see evidence of how they dominated the landscape. The scientists wrote: “We, a group of scientists with expertise in climate change, landslides, and tsunami hazards, have identified an unstable mountain slope above the toe of Barry Glacier in Barry Arm, 60 miles east of Anchorage, that has the potential to fail and generate a tsunami. The tributary located high above Pedersen Glacier separated from it sometime during the third quarter of the 20th century. In 1937, Yale Glacier's terminus was located at about the same position that it occupied when it was visited by the Harriman Alaska Expedition in 1899. The pair documents significant changes that have occurred during the 95 years between July 30, 1909 and August 11, 2004. The findings suggest scientists may need to consider additional factors when predicting ice melt in glacier If the goals of the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement are... Post was not sent - check your email addresses! When photographed, the glacier was retreating and had a sérac-capped terminus that ranged from 20-50 meters (65.6-164 feet) high. A large accumulation of snow sits on the valley floor adjacent to where the northern-most hanging glacier tributary previously joined Toboggan Glacier. This region has seen glacier retreat, which has led to instability on the slopes of a mountain in Barry Arm above the Barry Glacier. New photos released by NASA this week show that the melting of Taku has at last become visible. Pedersen Glacier lost an average of 65 feet a year from 1951 to 1986, but that rate jumped to 410 feet a year from 1994 to 2015, scientists report. The first photograph by U.S. Grant, is a July 20, 1909 view of the then slowly retreating western part of the terminus. Note the lack of floating ice and the abundant vegetation on many slopes throughout the photograph. This northeast-looking photograph and the one that follows were both taken from the same location on the west shoreline of Harris Bay, Kenai Fjords National Park, Kenai Mountains, Alaska. Vegetation, predominantly alder, covers much of the lower slopes on the opposite side of the inlet. This is a list of glaciers existing in the United States, currently or in recent centuries. These glaciers are located in nine states, all in the Rocky Mountains or farther west. The hillside in the foreground is covered by a few centimeters (inches) of snow. 72,659, This story has been shared 52,757 times. Pedersen Glacier's terminus has retreated more than 2 kilometers (1.24 miles). The researchers’ findings are available on the ADNR website. In the 2005 photograph, Muir Glacier is no longer visible, as it has retreated more than 50 kilometers (31 miles). The photographs document significant changes that have occurred during the 103 years between August 20, 1905 and August 22, 2008. The 1909 photograph by USGS Geologist U.S. Grant shows the west side of the terminus of the then retreating McCarty Glacier, a tidewater glacier. “At Karrat Fiord, west Greenland, a landslide in June 2017 similarly produced a tsunami that killed four people and destroyed a large portion of the town of Nuugaatsiaq, 20 miles away. Glaciers are rivers of ice. Frst night we camped right by Aialik Glacier (heard awesome "thundering" noises from the glacier), second night by Holgate Glacier (with humpback whales swimming by!). “This tsunami could impact areas frequented by tourists, fishing vessels, and hunters (potentially hundreds of people at one time). By 2005, the glacier had retreated, leaving behind sediment allowed the lake to be transformed into a small grassland. Dense, diverse vegetation, featuring spruce, has become established on the hill slopes. Note the absence of any identifiable vegetation and the numerous bare bedrock faces present on both sides of the glacier (W. O. During past ice ages, most recently about 10,000 years ago, glaciers covered the Alaska Range and much of Alaska in ice. The width of the tidewater part of the terminus of the glacier is much less than half of what it was in 1937. Take a cruise from Seward to see Pedersen Glacier, and the beautiful habitat surrounding it just under 20 … These scientists have predicted that the tsunami could cause issues over 10 miles away so a pre-warning could save lives. The 2000 photograph documents that after 95 years, the glacier is still thinning and retreating. Note the abundant vegetation on the near-ground slopes on the east side of Muir Inlet and in the lower part of Adams Inlet. Except for the moraine-covered ice on both margins of the glacier, snow still covers most of the lower reaches of the glacier. Copyright © 2020 CBS Interactive Inc.All rights reserved. The Greenland ice sheet is about the same size as the state of Alaska and 10,000 feet thick in places. Greenland and Antarctica lost the bulk of the ice, but nearly a quarter of the losses came from glaciers in Alaska, Canada and Patagonia. Northwestern Glacier spans most of the width of the photograph. Ongoing monitoring will continue so that scientists can spot warning signs of a landslide and subsequent tsunami before it happens. During the 113 years between photographs, Muir Glacier ceased to have a tidewater terminus. Little Holgate Glacier has separated into several smaller ice masses and Holgate's terminus, while still tidewater, has retreat from the field of view. It could mean a slow moving landslide is already taking place but if a large part of the mountain slope gave way it could have dire consequences. A pair of north-looking photographs, both taken from the same location near the retreating unnamed valley glacier that forms the East Fork of the Teklanika River, Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska. The World’s Glaciers Continue To Melt As Massive Chunk Of Arctic Ice Cap Breaks Off. Pedersen Glacier, located in Kenai Fjords National Park, receded throughout the 20th century exposing Pedersen Spit and Pedersen Lagoon. They calculate that Alaska's glaciers and frozen rivers are melting fast enough to cover the whole state with 30 centimeters of water (nearly a foot) every seven years. This 1941 photograph shows the lower reaches of Muir Glacier, then a large, tidewater calving valley glacier, and its tributary, Riggs Glacier. The 1919 photograph by USGS Geologist Stephen Capps shows the then retreating, debris-covered terminus of East Fork Teklanika Glacier, with an elevated lateral moraine on its west (left) side. “In Taan Fiord (Icy Bay, Alaska), a landslide that began moving slowly decades ago suddenly failed in October 2015. “The resulting tsunami reached elevations of 633 feet near the landslide, and 35 feet 15 miles away. The concerned experts claim the catastrophic event could even happen within the next 12 months if melting ice triggers a landslide of unstable rocks. Some icebergs, evidence of recent calving, can be seen floating in Muir Inlet. About In Kenai Fjords National Park, trends ESE to Aialik Bay N of Holgate Head, 20 mi. Glacier National Park is replacing signs that predicted its glaciers would be gone by 2020 By Christina Maxouris and Andy Rose, CNN Updated 3:09 PM ET, Wed January 8, 2020 The glacier has retreated more than 0.3 kilometers (0.19 miles) since 1919, retreating at an average rate of about 4.0 meters (13 feet) per year. Prince William Sound is a remote area but its surrounding waters are often frequented by boats, including cruise ships. The researchers said: “Landslides have set off giant waves elsewhere in Alaska and Greenland during the past decade. The 1909 photograph by USGS Geologist U.S. Grant shows Holgate Glacier, a tidewater glacier at the head of the fiord with Little Holgate Glacier, one of its former tributaries, located to its left. Among other glaciological research, mass balance measurements of Gulkana Glacier began in the early 1960s with the University of Alaska Gulkana Glacier Project (Péwé and Reger, 1983).In 1966 the USGS began direct measurements of surface mass balance, which, after a decade of dense spatial sampling, were reduced to three "index" sites distributed across the elevation range of Gulkana Glacier. The potential disaster was warned about in May by scientists who wrote an open letter to the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (ADNR). The former zone of barren bedrock is now covered by vegetation. The tidal flat is probably ice cored, underlain by glacier ice. “Surviving villagers still have not returned because a nearby slope is deforming and threatening to fail.
